The common misconception is twitter is more effective because the message goes to a wider audience than publishing on your blog site. While there is some truth to the statement, a twitter message by it’s self has low impact on search engine visibility. Combine twitter posts with your business blog articles and you have a powerful combination.
Going to back to answer the question, why blog or twit? To build relevant information for Google to index. Google will always have more traffic than Twitter, Facebook, etc: so your goal for every business publication should be to increase your visibility on Google.
Twitter posts are indexed by Google, but they go through the same relevancy equation as your web pages and blog articles. If the post is garbage (i.e. a blatant sales pitch), then your twitter post is not indexed. Linking your twitter message to a business blog article increases the relevancy potential for your twitter post.

If you have not heard about Twitter, then you probably need to get out of the office more!
Google has attempted to break into the social networking market with very limited success. Googles Orkut has some following, but it pales in comparison to Facebook and Twitter.
Social networking, internet marketing and search engine optimization industry experts are clamoring about the prospects of Google buying Twitter. Many call it a match made in heaven.
Frank Watson, with Search Engine Watch, wrote in his article, “Should Google Buy Twitter?“ “[Buying twitter]…would give them the hottest thing in social media right now…”
Google would not be the first internet giant to go after Twitter. This past year Twitter turned down Facebooks’ offer of $500 million.
What does this mean for you? If massive internet giants are going to consider Twitter, then you should too; but why is Twitter so attractive? They’ve raised $20 million in venture capital but they have yet to generate any revenue. Is this not the same recipe for disaster that caused the dot com bubble to burst?
Well, yes, but Twitter is different. Their unique “short” message format is the ultimate in viral communications. Hundreds of new tools are being created for Twitter every day to take advantage of the internet AND cell phone conversations. This gives us a hint to the true power of Twitter over Google, Facebook and other giants. Twitter is mobile!
It use to be that only techies were connected to the internet night and day, but with Twitter and a cell phone Joe Small Business Owner can now be connected. With short text based messages able to go directly from the internet to your cell phone AND back, the marketing potential is immense. Industry experts believe the next computing platform of choice is cell phones.
Your message must be compact enough to fit on our tiny cell phone screens and right now Twitter has the industry momentum to deliver. Take the time right now to create a Twitter account, then stay tuned for more tips on how to use the technology to bring more customers to your business.
